The project focuses on a structured way to investigate, comprehend, and tackle the evidence supporting the Mediterranean diet as practised by people in the Mediterranean region. It relies on careful observations, experiments, and analysis, enabling us to gather data and create solutions that can be tested and improved over time.

In this context, in line with the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork strategy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Tool4MEDLife Project aims to promote healthy and sustainable diets, implementing targeted actions through the design of new sustainable foods and developing educational strategies that raise awareness about good nutrition, providing clear information to help the population make the shift.

This research strategy aligns with the following guidelines:

have a neutral or positive environmental impact;
help to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impacts;
reverse the loss of biodiversity;
ensure food security, nutrition and public health, making sure that everyone has access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, sustainable food;
preserve the affordability of food while generating fairer economic returns, fostering the competitiveness of the EU supply sector and promoting fair trade;
Scientific Approach

Project Goals

Tool4MEDLife aims to promote healthy and sustainable dietary habits, particularly focusing on the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern (MDP), in light of concerns over shifting towards less healthy Western Dietary Patterns.

The project’s approach is structured around four central goals:

Nutritional Survey

Investigate, analyse and assess the elements that affect the embrace of healthy eating habits within the Mediterranean Basin population.

Education Toolkits

Design customised educational strategies and resources to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, encouraging the adoption of the Mediterranean diet.

Food characterisation and innovation

Design of innovative products useful to cover the nutritional needs of the population through the improvement of the nutritional properties of pivotal foods of the Mediterranean Diet and fortification with functional ingredients derived from natural sources that are usually considered waste. Good and healthy foods for people and the environment (ONE HEATH).

Communication, Dissemination and Results Exploitation

Creation and maintenance of the project website and social media channels, providing visitors with information about the project, including key outputs and deliverables. Multiplier events to present the project’s results and future work to the public, increasing the engagement. Obtained results and developed tools provide the basis for the exploitation and practical application of the outcomes in real-world scenarios, offering significant potential for scientific innovation, knowledge transfer and solutions to sustainable and healthy challenges.
